Prescribing Style: Interior Design Tips for the Budget-Savvy Medical Professional

Delayed gratification may be part of life during medical training, but your home doesn't have to feel like another thing you're waiting to enjoy. Having come out the other side of the journey, I'm happy to share a few budget-friendly design tricks I learned along the way.

Declutter

If you need a free place to start, decluttering is your best bet. Less visual clutter can instantly make a room feel calmer and more pulled together.

Go Thrifting

You never know what you'll find at resale shops. Another great option is buying from graduating medical students, residents, and fellows. Don't forget undergraduate and graduate school buy/sell groups, too.

Start Small

If you have a little extra to spend, choose one room or area. Make your bedroom feel like an oasis or create one corner you genuinely enjoy. You don't have to redo an entire home to make it feel better.

Stick to Neutrals

For larger furniture pieces, consider neutral colors and clean lines. You can change the look with pillows and throws, and the bigger pieces are more likely to work if another move is on the horizon.

Lighten Things Up

Lighting doesn't have to mean expensive fixtures. Simply changing bulbs and experimenting with warmer or cooler light can change the entire feel of a room.

Go Green

Plants are an inexpensive way to bring life and color into a space. Succulents, snake plants, and monstera are relatively low-maintenance options. Keeping them alive is a separate conversation.

Final Thoughts

There can be a lot of waiting during medical training. Waiting for the next stage, the next move, the bigger budget.

But you don't have to wait to make the home you're in now feel like yours.
