Moving to Houston for a Physician Job? When to Start Your Home Search

You’ve accepted a new job as a physician in Houston. Or maybe you’ve matched here for residency or fellowship. Either way, you know you’re moving. And somewhere between the new-job paperwork and everything else that comes with relocating, you realize:

When are we actually supposed to start looking for a home?

If you want the short answer, the earlier you reach out, the better.

But that doesn’t mean you need to start looking at houses right away.

A physician relocation has a lot of moving parts beyond the home itself. Your employment timeline, financing, travel, housing, and everything the rest of your family needs all have to come together around a start date that usually isn’t very flexible.

That’s why I wouldn’t wait until you’re ready to tour houses to start the conversation.

Starting early doesn’t mean house hunting early

There’s a difference between planning your move and actively looking for a home.

Starting the conversation earlier gives you time to understand Houston, consider your options, and make thoughtful decisions before everything starts to feel urgent.

Where you’ll be working matters. So does your family, your lifestyle, and what you need daily life in Houston to look like.

A resident moving to Houston alone may need a very different plan from a new attending relocating with a spouse, children, and a home to sell in another state.

The timing should reflect the move you’re actually making.

If you’re financing your home purchase

Physician financing can add another layer to the relocation timeline.

Loan programs, employment circumstances, and documentation requirements can vary, which is why it’s helpful to involve a lender who understands physician borrowers and relocation.

The key is to make sure the financing timeline fits the larger move, rather than treating the mortgage and relocation as two separate processes.

The home purchase is only one part of the move

A physician move isn’t just a real estate transaction. It’s a career and family transition happening at the same time.

The housing decision needs to make sense within that larger picture.

That’s why, if you already know you’re moving to Houston, it’s probably not too early to reach out.

Starting the conversation early doesn’t mean starting your home search early.

It means giving yourself room to make thoughtful decisions before the move makes them for you.
